The 'obelisk' at Potters Bar recorded on Sunday 30 March 2008. Copyright Duncan Lang. This sign is visible on the Up side atop a slight embankment about 1/2 mile north of Potters Bar station. It is situated towards the corner of the Northaw Golf Club Course. It is approx 14 feet tall and bears the coat of arms of The City of London and also the lettering ''14 & 15 Vic. C. 146''. The sign once denoted the boundary whereupon tax was due on coal transported into the Metropolitan Police District of London. It has served no purpose since the Act was finally abolished in 1890. This is one of few survivors. |
