An UID Class 47 hauled Down service passing the grounded 'LONDON 50 MILES' sign at Milepost 50 in the Barford area, June 1979. It is situated towards the corner of the Northaw Golf Club Course. It is approx 14 feet tall and bears the coat of arms of The City of London and also the lettering ''14 & 15 Vic. C. 146''. The sign once denoted the boundary whereupon tax was due on coal transported into the Metropolitan Police District of London. It has served no purpose since the Act was finally abolished in 1890. The gentlemen on the loco are Dave Thompson (left) from Hatfield, now DRS Traction Inspector / Driver Manager and Mick Barstow (right, standing). 50042 was named 'Triumph' a few weeks later on 4 October 1978. It was withdrawn on 15 October 1990 but purchased by The Bodmin & Wenford Diesel Group in November 1991, arriving at Bodmin 10 March 1992. It has since been returned to service in large logo livery. Can you identify this 'HERTFORD ROAD' sign? It is in enamel, dark blue with a white border all round. Fixing was to a wall with nails that had bent over the edges of the sign. It measures about 30 A BR(ER) dark blue fully flanged enamel direction sign, probably from Potters Bar or WGC stations. Closer inspection suggested that this may not have been a GNR 1896 Trespass Notice as previously thought. Copyright Alan Vacani. A framed NRM Reproduction of the Terence Cuneo Poster 'Greenwood Signal Box, New Barnet - On Early Shift'. The original artwork is dated 1948. Copyright Alan Vacani. Greenwood Signal Box was situated on the Downside at 10 Miles 10 Chains from Kings Cross. It was demolished Sun 25 - Mon 26 April 1959 under the 1950s widening to Potters Bar Scheme completed during 1959 which also provided colour light signalling through the section controlled from the new Potters Bar Signal Box.
